Sandi Thom
Flesh and Blood
(7/10)
Mostly solo recital of country blues songs by a seasoned musician.Purists, look away now! With a Fleetwood Mac-alike Sun Comes Crashing Down, a hauntingly beautiful country duet with Buffy Sainte-Marie (on Buffy’s own Big Ones Get Away), and the gospel-tingled title track, it’s obvious Sandi isn’t afraid to skip between genres. Producer and Black Crowe Rich Robinson enlisted the help of current and former bandmates Steve Gorman and Audley Freed to give a Crowes flavour to the swaggering opener, Sonny Boy Williamson’s Help Me, while Nashville stalwart Mike Webb adds fine piano to the traditional In The Pines and Dobro to the back-porch stomp of Rise As One. Sandi’s voice is rich and powerful through-out (and she plays some mean harp too_): with all this and great songwriting she should finally escape the shadow of her oft-cited 2006 flower-powered chart-topper.
